15-11-19: Yorkshire Amateurs (h) 5-2 (HT 1-2) Crowd (?)

N.B. George Birds started in goal, as the selected goalkeeper failed to arrive on time, but then must have also played right-hal-back. Seven of the team were players of local clubs and guested for the game as the new club tried to accumulate a strong team.

Match Report: Leeds Mercury: 17th November 1919:

LEEDS UNITED'S DEBUT

SUCCESSFUL START OF NEWLY-FORMED CLUB

The newly formed Leeds United Club made their debut at Elland Road, where they defeated the Yorkshire Amateurs by five goals to two. Considering that they only had a scratch team, their success gave cause for satisfaction.Their defence was remarkably good, particularly in the second half, when the Amateurs attack was repulsed in clever style. The half-backs also accomplished good work in attack.Heslop and Rodgers each scoring a goal. The forwards played well individually, but collectively they were inferior to the Amateur's set. Hunt and Mosier got a goal each as the result of solo play, as also did Birds. Payton and Keen scored the goals for the Amateurs whose forwards put up a good fight, but failed to overcome the admirable defence of the United. Leeds United, it is expected, will play in the Midland League in the near future. If a sufficient number of playerscan be signed on they will play their first League match next Saturday.
